Training Overview

This training grounds individuals in a very particular way of expanding the parameters of their voices and enabling others, whatever their level of verbal skill or accomplishment, to increase their expressive and communicative ability. The training is competence- and content-based, requiring both practical and intellectual understanding and demonstration of the core principles and theoretical underpinnings of VMT, and the presentation and performance of creative work. Those who complete both the experiential and the qualifying portions of the training are eligible to apply to the International Association for Voice Movement Therapy for acceptance as Registered VMT Practitioners (VMTR).

The Training Includes:
• A thorough grounding in the core principles of VMT;
• An introduction to the relation of vocal development to developmental movement, the acquisition of speech, and the formation of a sense of self;
• A basic grounding in VMT creative process work and song-making;
• An introduction to VMT therapeutic process;
• Observation, assessment and application of non-verbal behavior and expression in forming relationships;
• Exploration of individual issues and themes in movement, song, imagery and enactment;
• An active involvement in creative group process.

The Location

The training will be on the outskirts of Pretoria, Kameeldrift-East. Pretoria is South Africa’s administrative capital, serving as the seat of the executive branch of government, and as the host to all foreign embassies.

Pretoria straddles the Apies River and extends eastward into the foothills of the Magaliesberg mountains. It has a reputation as an academic city and centre of research, being home to the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), the University of Pretoria (UP), the University of South Africa (UNISA), the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and the Human Sciences Research Council. It also hosts the National Research Foundation and the South African Bureau of Standards.

Pretoria is sometimes called “Jacaranda City” because of the thousands of jacaranda trees planted along its streets and in its parks and gardens. In Pretoria there are great open spaces, and if you would like to get away, Hartbeespoort Dam and Roodeplaat Dam are close by where you can just relax close to the water. Dinokeng Game reserve is only a 40 minutes’ drive away. Dinokeng is the only reserve in Gauteng that is home to lions, leopards, black rhinoceros, African bush elephant, and African buffalo.

The Venue

The Voice Box Hall was built in 2022, specifically with the VMT trainings in mind.  It is close to everything one might need or want to visit, but far enough away to provide a contained and undisturbed atmosphere for therapeutic and creative work. We are only 30 min away from the centre of Pretoria, 60 min away from Johannesburg and 45 min away from OR Tambo International Airport).
